It Is Only an Act

The curtain has been drawn, the lights darken;
This moment of triumph has finally come.
Months and months of preparations,
No longer just wasted time.
My pawns take the stage,
Performing every movement, every action,
Just as I had once planned.
The opening scene; two lovers meet,
How horribly cliché it is indeed.
But trouble is on the move!
Stage hands panic, artists nearly scream;
Could my masterpiece have failed already?
Alas, the problem is resolved,
And all is calm.
I feel the drama, the tension, the suspense;
Waiting to know what happens next.
What terrible noise this is though!
A stutter, a slip, an awkward glance!
Nerves nearly conquer, to our dismay,
But the lead man saves a near fail.
The end is nearing; the drama builds;
What happens next, only I know.
The story’s climax has finally arrived!
Zip! Slash! Stab!
A flash of metal; and an eerie calm fogs over.
The play is over, the act is done.
But unknown to most;
The story has only just begun.
